Building an email list is one of the most daunting task digital marketer’s faces, and it’s pretty obvious too when, we are willing to reach out to our target market.
Building an email list requires a lot of patience, quality content, Offers, etc. to bring visitors/traffic to our website/landing pages which can be later converted into our customers and further lead us to more sales.
To shorten the amount of work required, a great number of tools can be found in black hat market which helps in scraping email ids from search engines, websites etc.
In this guide, we will be focusing on Scraping from Facebook, Craigslist, and search engines
Few tools are still there in the market which can extract the User IDs of people who have joined certain groups, which can be further utilized in creating FB Ad campaigns but there is no such tool which can extract the email address of users which they are using to log in.
There is one small tool called Xtrapro which can easily crawl posts on Facebook and scrape email addresses mentioned here and there.
For instance: whenever there is a post by someone asking for requirements for a ‘content writer’, a lot of fellow writers tend to write their emails to get the job, this tool will be able to pick up those addresses, remove the duplicates and give you a filtered list of few thousand emails within few hours
Some of the unique features of this tools might blow you away, they include
- An option to extract email ids from different @ patterns like Gmail, yahoo, outlook etc.
- An Option to search by keywords (SEO, WordPress etc.)
- An option to search across different time zones (this year, this week, last year etc.)
- An option to search across different entity types (posts, shares, photos etc.)
This tool comes in the form of an extension for chrome browser and can be installed after the payment is done.
You can just simply enter your desired keywords and scrape email ids from Facebook posts, videos, shares etc.
Let’s first download and install the extension in our browser, you can make a purchase from here.
Once you have the zip file, simply drag and drop the file into the extension section of your browser.
Once, we have the extension installed, next thing we would want to perform is keyword research for which we are extracting email ids from Facebook.
Head over to free online tools like wordstream, Keyword.io and the one I love Ubersuggest.io
For this guide, we will be using Ubersuggest and WordPress as the seed keyword.
Input ‘WordPress’ as your keyword and press ’suggest’.
All the relevant keywords will pop up, now all you have to do is click on the ‘view as text’ option and
Copy the ones you would want to get email ids for.
Enter the selected keywords into the extension which can be found on the top right-hand side of
Note: make sure that you’re logged into Facebook.
- Enter @ patterns which can be Gmail, yahoo, Yandex etc., you can include one or all of your desired patterns.
- Select entity types
- Select time ranges
- Delay between queries
Let the extension run for some time and it will present you with a good number of email ids.
Download the list and run through some filtering software to analyze the working and non-working email ids.
Craigslist and Scrapebox
Scrapebox is one of the tools used by a lot of players in the market, it has got plenty of Add-ons to choose from, each with unique capabilities and functions.
There is a reason why it is called ‘The Swiss Army knife of SEO!’
The tool has got features right from Keyword research to backlink checker, from article scraper to anchor text checker and the list goes on…
List of Add-ons can be found here.
Anyways that, not the motive of this guide, here we will be using Scrapebox to extract email addresses from Craiglist for a specific keyword.
So, let’s start mining the email addresses, follow step by step
Step 1: Open Mozilla Firefox and go to Craiglist.com, which will automatically redirect you to a location-specific URL.
Step 2: Open new tab and write ‘about:config’ with the quotations and search for javascipt, right click and click on Toggle
Step 3: Search for any keyword on craigslist, Keyword here is “House Wanted” and search
Step 4: Copy the URL from the address bar.
Step 5: Paste the URL into the URL’s harvested section of scrapebox
Step 6: Go to the Add-on section of scrapebox and look for ‘Scrapebox Link Extractor”
Step 7: Load URLs from harvester and choose ‘Internal links only’, Press start
Step 8: Click on ‘show saved folder’ and open the txt file and copy all the URLs
Step 9: Paste the URLs again into the ‘URLs Harvested’ section of Scrapebox and repeat step 6 to 8
Step 10: Paste the copied URLs into the URLs harvested section and go to remove/filter option
Step 11: Remove URLs not containing ‘Reply’ in them
Step 12: Go to Grab/check and select the very first option ‘Grab emails from URL lists’
Let it run for some time and you will have plenty of email addresses right from craigslist
There are plenty of free as well as automated tools in the market which can be utilized to scrape emails from search engines.
We can gather millions of email ids just via search engines using desired keywords, locations etc.
The tool that I have been using and found OK (not the best one) is Atomic Email Hunter from Mass Mail Software.
The tool does pretty good job in crawling and scraping but we need to set a lot of filters to make sure we get relevant email ids from our keywords.
For Instance: Searching for a keyword ‘Cotton T-Shits’ might give some generic emails as well as business emails, which will surely include these ‘firstname.lastname@example.org’, email@example.com, Donotreply@doman.com etc.
These domains generally do not accept your email campaigns because of strict spam filtering and other factors.
Here is a short demo of how this software works and how it can help us in scraping emails
Pick up a keyword
Change search engines to your preferred location
On the Right-hand side, you will see a number of URLs being crawled in real time and so the results will be shown accordingly.
Although, it may sound very easy to do but, scraping emails from search engines is not the activity recommended at least today, if we can scrape, similarly others can also scrape and spam the hell out of these email addresses.
So try at your own risk
Closing the Coil
And now, you can start with your email marketing campaign but keep in mind that these are not your subscribers, you need to be aware of the CAN-SPAM ACT and market accordingly.
